Profile

Teaching at the IMS-EMA (formerly reciprocating engines) contains the center of gravity  for the internal combustion engine and all related matters. The institutes new name reflects the need of electric mobility. The institute is equipped with multiple engine test benches, injection test benchs, special measurement setups and extensive metrology. Here the main issues were identified for an overview:

  • Mixture formation - Otto / Diesel
  • Injection - petrol / diesel
  • Alternative Fuels
  • Acoustics
  • Exhaust emissions, soot analysis
  • Analysis and Optimization of cylinder flow
  • 1D-/3D-Simulationen

The EMA financed itself with publicly funded basic research projects (DFG, AiF) and from application-oriented industrial research. Intensive cooperation with leading vehicle manufacturers and the supply industry is particularly worth mentioning. The topics of the studies- and bachelor works are recruited from the cooperation with industrial enterprises.

 Research Focus Automotive

The research focus of the Automotive was launched by the OvGU 2005.
The joint research project "Competence in Mobility" COMO, forms the core of the research in Automotive.
Sub Areas are:
- Energy conversion & propulsion systems
- Security & comfort and
- Virtual Engineering.
COMO project is funded by the State of Saxony-Anhalt and the European Structural Funds for regional development.

Institute for Competence in car mobility (IKAM) GmbH

Investments were financed from the state of Saxony-Anhalt economic stimulus package and own budget.
The Otto-von-Guericke University was entrusted with the implementation of the investment in the creation of new research institute.
The former chair for piston engines (now EMA) had a  big proportion on this.
The IKAM has among other features a powerful drive test station.
